I'm so excited for this post today! I want to introduce you to the newest country music group South Haven! South Haven is made up of Brit Willson, Ray Taaffe, Maddie Walker, and Nicolette Mare. I'm so excited to get to interview them and share all about them with you! Keep reading to see more about this new group, their new music, CMA Fest and more!
Who makes up South Haven? Tell us a little bit about each of you?
Brit Willson- grew up in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and developed a passion for music at a very young age. She moved to Nashville after high school to pursue a career as an artist and never looked back. Through writing songs and learning about the industry, she realized she wanted to help redefine what country music could lyrically and sonically be.
Ray Taaffe- Drenched in the California ocean sun yet covered in the old ranch dirt, a bohemian country spirit. From San Juan Capistrano, CA, Ray ventured to LA to pursue an education in music and gain a fresh perspective. Craving open space and a slower pace to plant new roots, she moved to Nashville in April of 2015, where almost instantaneously, became part of this growing project, now known as South Haven.
Maddie Walker- is a homegrown Iowa girl, with a heart for music. Singing since she was a little girl Maddie has always been driven to share her music and her spirit with those around her. Her dimples and curls never fail to make a presence, but her quirky personality keeps her grounded in her Iowa roots.
Nicolette Mare- is a New York girl with music in her veins. She plays guitar, writes music, and never fails to have some sort of braid in her hair. Being a shy girl, music helps her express herself. "Where words fail, music speaks."
How did you four end up meeting and deciding that you wanted to create this powerhouse band?
Brit and Ray lived in Nashville and played Song Suffragettes, a female only writers round at The Listening Room Cafe on Monday nights. We felt like a girl group was needed in country music that wasn't a duo or trio. We were on the hunt for 2 more group members and used social media to find them. We didn't want to have one person to take the lead, but we really wanted to bring all 4 of our unique sounds and blend them to create something totally different.
What would you describe your bands sound as? How do you work to blend all four of your voices to create such awesome music?
Our sound is country with influences of pop and rock, with a little bit of EDM in the production. We like to say that it's 2 clicks off center. We kind of knew the 4 of us were the right fit because we didn't have to try that hard to make it blend. Our sound is something that is unique, it flows naturally and it works!
"Firestarters" is probably my favorite song on your South Haven album, what is your favorite song on the album and why does this song have such a special meaning for you guys?
Maddie - I like "One Night Stand" because I have to do a lot of traveling and leaving family for music. It's hard, but this has always been a dream I have wanted to pursue.
Nicolette -"Black Dress" (it hasn't been released yet) it's the first song we wrote as a group and it's an empowering song for a woman to show that you don't always need a man in your life.
Ray- you are saying everything I wanted to say!
Brit- I really like "Firestarters" because it's catchy and melodic in the production. It gets stuck in my head all the time. I think it's a great first song as a band to really set the tone of who we are and what our sound is.
Ray- "Black Dress" is also my favorite because it's the first song we wrote as a group, which was an amazing experience for us and I love singing it because it's such an empowering song and a great reminder that you don't need anybody telling you what to do, what to wear, or how to act...but to just be you and be in love with that.
When do you plan to release music to iTunes and other markets where your fans can buy your music?
"Firestarters" is available on all platforms and we released the music video for it!
Check out the music video below!
What will 2016 hold for you guys as a band? How will you work to get your name known and out there?
We are working on writing more to further establish our sound. We are also focusing on finding the songs that really represent us. The plans are to do more live performances to connect with fans.
Can we expect some tour dates or will this year be more about making your sound and music known?
Hopefully we will have a tour! We literally can't wait for that!
Will you guys be partaking in CMA Fest this year as you work to introduce your band? (NashNews will be there and we want to make sure we see you and also let our readers know where to be on the lookout for you!)
