Today I want to introduce you to the incredibly talented, and incredibly beautiful April Kry. I talked with April about her musical sound, her songs "Fireflies" and "Beauty Queen", CMA Fest, and more! Keep reading to catch up with April and see what 2016 has in store for her musical career.
NashNews: Thanks so much for taking the time to answer some questions for me! Can you start by telling us about yourself (how old you are, where you're from, when you started taking an interest in music, so on)?
April Kry: Of course! Thanks so much for having me. Well, I started singing when I was five years old. As time passed it became less of a hobby, and more of a passion. I'm originally from Connecticut, but after I graduated high school I decided to make the big move to Nashville to pursue my music and I've been here for almost four years!
NN: How would you describe your sound? What makes your voice stand out over other women in country music?
April: I would describe my sound as passionate and honest. I like singing about things that people can relate to - falling in love, being vulnerable, heartbreak ... etc. Growing up, I was influenced by so many different genres and I think you can hear that in my voice.
NN: You've recorded some songs such as "Fireflies" and "Beauty Queen", what is one of your favorite songs that you've recorded and what makes it so special to you? What's the meaning behind it?
April: There's a song called "Little Plot Of Dirt" that I recorded a while ago that really struck a chord with me. It's a song about domestic violence, and although I've never personally experienced it I know some people who have. The song is based on a true story about a woman who liver her whole life hiding her abuse. It's one of my favorite songs I've ever recorded because it really sheds light on an important issue that we don't talk about a lot.
NN: You do some cover videos that you release throughout the year. How do you choose what song to cover? How do you work on making it a cover that's your own version?
April: Yes! I love putting my own spin on covers. I try to do covers of songs I hear and immediately connect to because that makes it easier for the listener to connect to it as well :) As far as making the song my own, I sometimes like to speed the songs up or slow them down depending on the song, and that gives the song a totally different feel.
NN: Here is a recent cover of "Smoke Break" by April!
NN: What does 2016 have in store for you? Tours? New music? What can you spill for us!?
April: I am SO excited about some new music for 2016. I've been writing and recording a bunch and I can't wait to release this stuff. I'm hoping for my EP to release sometime in March! I don't have a solid date on that yet, though!
NN: What is one of your bucket list items that you would love to be able to cross off in your music career?
April: I would absolutely love to do a duet with Martina McBride. She is one of my biggest inspirations and it would be a dream come true!!
NN: Where do you hope your music career is in five years?
April: I hope to be headlining my own tour!
NN: Will you be performing at CMA Fest this year?
April: I don't have anything booked as of yet, but if I do I will let you know where!
